The World's Eighth Wonder
ANGKOR WAT, in Cambodia, proudly holds the Guinness World Record for the world's largest sacred edifice. It recently received the prestigious title of the world's eighth wonder. Its fame precedes it; it is one of the world's most visited sights.

Angkor Wat, located in the heart of Cambodia, has surpassed Italy's POMPEII to become the eighth Wonder of the World. This achievement is even more significant given Pompeii's large annual tourist influx.

ANGKOR WAT LOCATION:

Angkor Wat sits about five miles north of today’s city of Siem Reap in Cambodia, which has over 200,000 people living there. Back in the day, it was the main city of the Khmer empire. The name “Angkor” means “capital city” in the Khmer language, and “Wat” means “temple.”

The title of 'Eighth Wonder of the World' is normally given upon remarkable new works, projects, or designs, and Angkor Wat now rightly holds it, replacing Italy's Pompeii.
Covering about 400 acres, it stands as the largest religious monument globally.

The moniker 'Eighth Wonder of the World' is given informally to outstanding new structures, initiatives, or concepts. In the 12th century, King Suryavarman II built Angkor Wat.
It was originally dedicated to the Hindu deity Vishnu before becoming a Buddhist shrine.

The walls of the temple are ornamented with elaborate carvings depicting stories from Hindu and Buddhist mythology, demonstrating the transition from Hinduism to Buddhism.

This complex in the Khmer Empire's capital took roughly 30 years to create. It was originally devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu. However, it later became a Buddhist temple.

In 1586, a Portuguese priest named Antonio de Madalena visited Angkor Wat. Then, in the 1840s, a French adventurer named Henri Mouhot discovered it again and told everyone about it. He claimed it was more impressive than what Greece or Rome had left behind.

ANGKOR WAR HISTORY:

In the early 1900s, the French prepared Angkor Wat for tourists. However, following conflicts in Cambodia, such as the Khmer Rouge regime and the Cambodian Civil War, did some harm.
The walls still have gunshot holes in them from that era.

When Cambodia gained its independence from France in 1953, it took ownership of Angkor Wat. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992, indicating its exceptional significance.

These days, a large number of tourists come annually, particularly in the early morning to witness the stunning sunrise over the temple.
